Los Muertos Pier
Final de la calle Francisca Rodríguez, Playa Los Muertos, Zona Romántica
Los Muertos Pier is the Zona Romántica's postcard: a curved walkway that heads out over the water and wraps around a tall, sail-shaped metal structure. Walk to the end for views of the bay, the beach and the hills to the south.
The current pier opened on January 4, 2013, as part of the downtown renovation, and was designed by architect José de Jesús Torres Vega. It replaced earlier piers: a simple wooden one in the 1960s and later a concrete one. In 2014 CNN included it in its list of the world's most beautiful piers.
At night the sail lights up and slowly shifts colors. In late 2023 the Jalisco state government finished a full rebuild: corroded parts were removed, benches and railings were replaced and new lighting was installed.
It's also a working pier: pangas and water taxis leave from here for the beaches on the south side of the bay, and fishermen still cast their lines from the edge of the walkway.
Getting there: It's at the end of Francisca Rodríguez street in the Zona Romántica. From the Malecón, walk south, cross the Río Cuale on the pedestrian bridge and continue along the beach or Olas Altas street.
When to go: At sunset and after dark, when the sail's lights come on.
Cost: Free to walk. Water taxis and boat trips leaving from here are paid separately.
Tips: If you're taking a water taxi, ask at the pier about schedules and the last return trip before you go. Watch out for fishing lines along the edges.
Accessibility: The walkway is wide with a firm surface; we found no official information on wheelchair accessibility.
