El Salado Estuary
Blvd. Francisco Medina Ascencio (Puerta 4, frente al Hospital Naval), junto a Marina Vallarta
El Salado is a mangrove estuary right in the city, between Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio and Marina Vallarta. In 2000 the Jalisco State Congress declared it a protected natural area under the Ecological Conservation Zone category, covering almost 169 hectares, about 126 of them mangrove and salt marsh. In 2020 the state government expanded the protected area to roughly 208 hectares, and it is now El Salado Estuary State Park.
Three mangrove species grow here (red, white and black), and the estuary is home to river crocodiles, green iguanas and more than a hundred bird species. Besides sheltering wildlife, the mangrove helps filter water and softens the blow of storms on the city.
How you visit has changed over time. For years the classic outing was a biologist-led boat tour with a climb up an observation tower, by reservation and for a fee. As of August 2026 the boat tours were still suspended while the facilities are restored, and the park offered a trail of about 200 meters to see the mangrove and its wildlife. Check hours and fees on the park's official channels before you go.
Getting there: The entrance is on Boulevard Francisco Medina Ascencio; tours have met at Gate 4 (Puerta 4), across from the Naval Hospital. Buses to the Marina or the airport pass right by.
When to go: Hours published in 2025: Monday to Friday 9 am to 3 pm, Saturday 9 am to 1 pm (confirm before going). Mornings are cooler.
Cost: We couldn't find a current official fee for the trail. Boat tours, when running, have been paid and by reservation. Confirm before you go.
Tips: Bring biodegradable insect repellent, a hat and water. Stay back from the water's edge, never feed the crocodiles, and follow the park staff's instructions.
Accessibility: Short trail; wheelchair accessibility not confirmed.
