Los Arcos is a group of rocky islets just offshore, between Las Gemelas and Mismaloya. The sea carved tunnels through the rock; the best known are Arch Rock, Turtle Rock and Devil's Rock. Seabirds such as pelicans and blue-footed boobies rest there.

On July 28, 1975, Mexico's official gazette (Diario Oficial de la Federación) published an agreement by the then Ministry of Industry and Commerce declaring the waters within one kilometer of the rocks a 'refuge zone for the protection of marine flora and fauna.' Commercial and sport fishing, spearfishing included, have been banned there ever since. Many people call it a 'National Marine Park,' but that isn't its official designation; there's an ongoing push for that status. Since 2022, Puerto Vallarta has marked Los Arcos de Mismaloya Day every July 28.

Seeing them costs nothing: the lookout on Highway 200, just before Mismaloya, has one of the best views of the bay. Getting close to the rocks to snorkel or dive means a panga, tour or kayak, and those cost money.

Getting there: To see them for free: the Los Arcos lookout on Highway 200 just before Mismaloya (there's a bus stop with that name). To get close: pangas from Mismaloya Beach or tours from the Los Muertos Pier and the Maritime Terminal.

When to go: November to April usually brings calmer seas and better visibility for snorkeling. The lookout is lovely around sunset.

Cost: Viewing them from the lookout is free. Reaching the rocks requires a panga, tour or kayak (paid). We found no official access fee for the area.

Tips: Don't fish or take anything from the water; it's prohibited. If you snorkel, don't stand on or touch the coral, and use reef-safe sunscreen or, better, a long-sleeve rash guard.

Accessibility: The lookout is right on the highway; no information on ramps.
